Installing A 3-Zone Ductless Mini Split In Ocean City

Installing A 3-Zone Ductless Mini Split In Ocean City!

Like many homes in Ocean City, this lovely Victoria-style home has been split into two units- one on the first floor and one on the second floor. And like some older homes, the furnace and AC coil were doing a poor job of keeping the second floor as comfortable as the first. The homeowner called us to see what we could do to make sure both these units were comfortable and energy-efficient to keep costs down.

We’ve installed ductless mini splits in Ocean City homes and businesses in the past, as well as the rest of the surrounding towns in South Jersey, and are familiar with the comfort challenges. Not every home is the same, and not every HVAC solution is going to fit every home. This is why we explore every option, and give business and homeowners a chance to choose the system that best fits their needs. In this case, the solution was installing a multi-zone ductless mini split system.

Problem:A lovely home in Ocean City had a second floor that wasn’t getting the heating and cooling needed.

Solution: A three zone Mitsubishi ductless hyperheat heat pump system will help keep the second floor bedrooms and living room/kitchen area comfortable all year long.

Checking Out The Home

Our Comfort Consultant, Paul went out to the home and started out by doing a thorough inspection of the current system, to see why the second floor wasn’t getting the comfort it needed. He found that there was “quirky” duct work on the traditional HVAC system, which significantly impeded airflow to the second floor.

This meant choosing among several options, from redoing the ductwork and hoping it solved the problem, but that would require a lot more internal reconstruction in the home. The second option was to create a separate heating and cooling system for the second floor unit.

We suggested a Mitsubishi hyper heat heat pump system might be a good option.  This would allow us to create separate zones of heating and cooling for the different parts of the second floor, without impacting the comfort on the unit downstairs. It would also allow the opportunity to have a better sense of the energy usage for each unit, and allow the homeowner to price his rentals of the home accordingly.

After considering all the different options Paul proposed, the homeowner chose a three-zone Mitsubishi Ductless Hyperheat heat pump system.

Why Choose A Ductless Heat Pump?

Mitsubishi Hyper heat heat pumps are high-efficiency systems, designed to be able to provide both heating and cooling to your home. They can take the ambient heat from the outside air and pump it into your home for heat, or reverse the process to remove heat from your home, providing effective cooling and AC in the summer!

The systems have two basic components- an outdoor condenser unit and indoor cassettes or heads, which are usually mounted up on the wall, out of the way. That’s why these systems are often referred to as “mini-splits”.  The outdoor condenser unit can be sized to control multiple indoor units, and each unit can be controlled independently, creating a separate zone of comfort wherever it is placed.  This means you can have the AC running in one room and have it shut off completely in another room not in use- and it turns out that can save you a ton of money on your energy bills as well!

The indoor units are equipped with state of the art sensors, which can monitor your room for both heat and humidity, and make the small adjustments necessary to keep the room perfectly comfortable.  The systems are designed to be able to distribute hot or cool air evenly throughout a space, eliminating the hot and cold spots you can get with baseboard heating or window air conditioners.  The sensors can even be set to put the system into standby mode when you;re not home, helping you save energy- and money on your bills!

Each unit is controlled by a convenient handheld remote, or you can set them up to work on a standard thermostat. They can also be controlled from a smart phone app, which gives you a lot of flexibility to control your system, even if you’re not home.

Ductless Mini Splits Provide Quiet Comfort

One of the other benefits of Mitsubishi ductless heat pump systems is that they are super-quiet, inside and out. Inside, they operate at about 19-22 db- whisper quiet. That means you’ll barely notice when the unit kicks on to keep you comfortable, and you can watch TV, take a Zoom call and never even notice the unit has turned on- all you’ll notice is the comfort.

When you have rental units, keeping the peace between neighbors is important, and this quiet system will help make the upstairs unit peaceful enough that all you’ll hear is the ocean!

Ductless Mini Splits Are Positioned Out Of The Way, Typically On A Wall!

As you can see from the pictures, we were able to position the indoor units on the wall, out of the way, and where they can provide the most comfort in each room. And best of all, they won’t take up a window or block the view like a window air conditioning unit might, and they are up to 30% more efficient than window units as well!

This Mini Split Is Perfect For A Bedroom Or Home Office!

We were also able to position the outdoor condenser unit outside, off the ground to keep it clear of debris, safe from any storm flooding and operating freely. We even added some lattice work to help camouflage the unit and help it blend into the other architectural details on the home, while giving it a beach- feel.

Ductless Mini Splits Save Energy And Lower Utility Bills

The Outdoor Condenser Connects To The Mini Splits Inside.

When you have a rental home with multiple units, it’s important to be able to control costs, and have a reliable HVAC system that’s easy to maintain and operate. Mitsubishi Electric hyperheat systems are great for this, and are some of the most energy-efficient systems on the market. Because of this high efficiency, they qualify for rebates from your energy company – these homeowners qualified for a $400 rebate!  Homeowners may qualify for the Inflation Reduction Act Tax credits of up to $2,000, making these systems even more affordable to install.
