Cooling A Bedroom In Ocean City With A Ductless Mini Split
Ocean City has great homes like this one, that serve both as vacation retreats and year-round homes. When you’ve made a big investment in a home at the Jersey Shore, you want it to be comfortable year round. The homeowners loved the vaulted ceilings in the master bedroom, but it came with a downside- the master suite always seemed to be too cold in the winter and never quite cool enough in the summer. They gave us a call here at Broadley’s to see what we could suggest so they could get the comfort they wanted, year round.
Problem: This amazing home in Ocean City had a traditional HVAC system, but the Master bedroom with a vaulted ceiling was always too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer, keeping the owners from really enjoying their home.
Solution: A single-zone Mitsubishi ductless heating and air conditioning mini-split will make the master suite comfortable every day of the year!

Vaulted Ceilings- A Heating and Cooling Challenge
Vaulted ceilings create a sense of spaciousness and architectural interest in a home- but they can also cause problems with heating and cooling. The forced air heating and cooling system wasn’t able to keep this room as comfortable as the rest of the house. The extra space would cause hot air to rise and get trapped above, keeping the lower part of the room chilly, especially in the winter. In the summer, the room wasn’t getting cool enough, and while the ceiling fan and duct work helped, it wasn’t really enough to keep comfortable in the height of the summer heat.
When arrived to the home for a free consultation, we inspected the current whole home HVAC system, and it was working properly. When we saw the master suite and the layout, we knew the best solution to give the homeowners the comfort they craved: install a single zone Mitsubishi ductless single head mini-split with both heating and air conditioning functions to create zoned comfort in the master bedroom.
Solving the Problem and Saving Money
When you have a room that never seems to be comfortable like this one, there are many solutions available. Cheaper, stop-gap solutions like space heaters in the winter or window air conditioners for the summer also tend to be energy hogs – and they often don’t do a good job distributing the air throughout the space, so you still end up with hot and cold spots, and end up with higher energy bills to boot!
Creating a separate zone of heating and cooling for hard to heat and cool rooms like this one is often the best solution, and Mitsubishi mini-split ductless heat pump systems are a perfect choice.
Zoning for Comfort- And Lower Energy Bills
With Mitsubishi ductless heating and cooling systems, you don’t need to install any new ductwork. The systems consist of an outdoor heat pump condenser unit, and an indoor air handler unit, often called a cassette or head. The system acts as an independent heating and cooling system for the area where it’s installed, providing year-round comfort through one unit.
The indoor head, as you can see in the pictures, is placed up high on the wall, where the advanced sensor system can monitor both temperature and humidity in the room. When needed, it will turn on and add heat or cooling, as needed, and distribute the air evenly throughout the entire space, eliminating hot and cold spots. The system can be controlled from a handheld remote, or you can add a thermostat, or simply use an app on your smart phone!
As a heat pump, the system is incredibly energy efficient. The inverter system is able to add just the amount of heating or cooling needed to keep the room perfectly comfortable, eliminating big swings in temperature with normal systems that are either On or Off. The system can also be configured with smart sensors that can sense where people are in the room as well, directing comfort towards them, or going into stand-by mode when no one is in the room- which can end up saving you a lot of money on your energy bill every month!
By creating separate zone of heating and cooling for the master suite, the homeowners will be able to set the comfort level as needed, without affecting the temperature in the rest of the house. This ensures everyone gets the comfort they want, when they want it. It also means they can put the system in standby or turn it off when not in use, which also leads to big energy savings.
Adding Zones for Added Comfort
We had worked with the homeowners before- this project was actually the second Mitsubishi Ductless system they installed! Previously, they added a single zone of ductless heating and air conditioning for the kitchen, which had heating & cooling comfort issues. Now with a second zone for the master suite, the homeowners will have the comfort they want throughout their home, while keeping their energy bills low.
With weather patterns becoming more and more unpredictable, having a system where you can add just a bit of heating or cooling where you need it means spending less money on energy bills overall. The homeowners can also opt to use the Mitsubishi units especially in the Spring and Fall for the key areas in the home, saving significant energy in not having to heat or cool the whole house.
Looking Good Inside and Out
When you have a beautiful home like this one, you want to be sure it looks good inside and out. That’s why we made sure that when installing the outdoor condenser unit, we mounted it off the ground, to make sure it was less susceptible to the elements and debris, and we used a line hide that mimicked the trim and downspouts on the home already, blending in with the style of the home.
The Bottom Line- Great Savings and Comfort
The homeowners are thrilled with their new Mitsubishi ductless heating and air conditioning system for their master suite. The amazing efficiency of these systems means they use less energy and end up keeping your energy bills in check, even when Mother Nature is dishing up extremes in weather.
