The Drawbacks Of Window AC Units!

Are you getting ready to lug those old, noisy window AC units out of storage this spring? We have all used window AC at some point, and know that even though it cools the space, it comes with its own drawbacks.

I’ve worked in plenty of homes and businesses that have upgraded from window air conditioners to central air conditioning, or ductless mini splits. It’s easy to see why people use window AC units, and also easy to see how they can get sick of them pretty quickly.

In this article, we’ll get into the pros and cons of window air conditioners, and a few alternatives that may interest you. If you are looking for help with the air conditioning in your South Jersey home or business, give us a call at (609) 390-3907, or contact us online to speak to an expert!

Why Choose A Window AC?

It’s Cheap

The basic and most common reason people use window AC units is because they are cheaper than every other cooling solution. You can usually purchase a window air conditioner for anywhere between $100 – $400. There are no installation costs, because you can put these in yourself, without the help of a professional. The price of window air conditioners is easily the biggest selling point for these systems.

It’s Easy

Just like we mentioned above, these systems are easy to install. You don’t need a professional assessment of your home, or any fancy tools. In some cases you may want to put a piece of wood on the outside of your window sill to hold the AC unit in place and make sure it’s stable. Other than that, you pop the system into your window, secure it with a few screws, and you are good to go.

What Are The Problems With Window AC Units?

Despite their upfront low cost, window AC units have several disadvantages that can sway you to a different cooling solution for your space.

Window AC Units Don’t Cool Evenly

If you’ve ever sat directly in front of a window AC unit, it probably made you feel FREEZING cold. These systems blow air in one direction, to one space, and hope that it comforts an entire room. Often there are spots in the room that are comfortable, but other spaces that are far too cold.

Window AC Is Too Noisy

This may be the most annoying part of a window AC unit. Window AC units tend to be VERY noisy. They are extremely noticeable when they are running, and can lead you to needing to turn the TV up VERY loudly, and not being able to enjoy peace and quiet. If you’ve ever slept in a room with a window AC, you know how loud it can get.

Window AC Units Aren’t Energy Efficient

Window AC Units Come With Plenty Of Drawbacks.

Compared to newer central air systems or ductless mini split options, many window AC units are not energy efficient. Some of the newer window units can be a bit more efficient than older models, but on the whole, these systems aren’t very efficient. This leads to higher energy bills than you get with other AC systems.

The one advantage here is that you don’t need to use them all at once. If you have bedrooms that aren’t being used during the day, you can keep the window units off, saving energy that way, whereas a central air conditioner will try and keep the entire home cool at all times, wasting money and energy.

Window AC Units Cause Safety Issues

Safety can be an issue if you have unsecured window AC units. Burglars and intruders can easily push a window AC unit in, and gain access to your home or business through a window. If you are using one of these units, make sure it is screwed in and secure. This way no one is able to break into your home at any time.

Window AC Units Take Over A Window

Finally, a window AC unit takes up valuable window space, blocking natural light and views. If you are someone who likes some sun in the house, and a view outside, a window unit can ruin that. Especially in rooms like bedrooms that have a limited amount of windows, you don’t want to use them to house an air conditioner.

What Are Some Alternatives To Window AC?

Now luckily window units have become better, but still, they are hardly anyone’s preferred method of cooling the space. There are some great alternatives to keeping your home or business cool in the summer.

Central Air Conditioning

Central AC is the most popular option, and one that we install plenty of. This is when a condenser outside hooks up to ductwork inside, and distributes cool air throughout the home. This is what most people enjoy, and we see the most of at the Jersey Shore.

Heat Pumps

Heat pumps are becoming a more and more popular option to comfort a home all year long. They work by transferring heat outside in the summer and inside in the winter, providing a comfortable temperature year-round. Heat pumps are known for their energy efficiency and can significantly reduce energy bills. These systems also qualify for rebates and tax credits to help lower your initial investment.

Ductless AC

Ductless mini splits are another alternative that offers flexible cooling solutions without the need for installing ductwork. These systems consist of an outdoor compressor connected to one or more indoor air handling units. These systems are energy efficient, provide zoned HVAC, and are whisper quiet. This is one of our favorite options to heat and cool any space.
