How Broadley’s Transformed a South Jersey High School

How Broadley’s Transformed a South Jersey High School

Ever wonder how major energy-saving HVAC upgrades happen without disrupting daily life?

An HVAC project at the bustling Chartertech High School for the Performing Arts in Somers Point provides the perfect lesson on replacing commercial heating and cooling systems without interrupting everyday routines.

Chartertech staff and students are enjoying new energy-efficient heating, cooling, and lighting systems thanks to thoughtful planning from our expert team at Broadley’s Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning and $150,000 in financial incentives from the Direct Install program in New Jersey.

The program dramatically reduced out-of-pocket expenses and made the large-scale project feasible without intruding on student learning time.

You might recognize Broadley’s for our residential plumbing, heating, and air conditioning services on the South Jersey Shore. We are also a leading name in commercial HVAC maintenance, repair, and installation. We are dedicated to improving comfort and energy efficiency at a substantial cost savings to businesses, schools, and organizations in Cape May Court House, and across South Jersey.

Here’s how we helped Chartertech:

Upgrading Commercial HVAC Without Disruption

Chartertech High School faced a common challenge for older commercial buildings with aging infrastructure. Their HVAC systems were outdated, inefficient, and could not provide the comfort necessary for a modern learning environment.

The lighting system also needed a significant overhaul to improve visibility and energy efficiency.

It was a complex project with a challenging deadline. The work included replacing 11 rooftop package HVAC units without interrupting classes, rehearsals, or other activities. At Broadley’s, we are accustomed to working within tight deadlines and understand and respect our clients’ operational needs.

Knowing that the Chartertech High School project demanded precise coordination and a tight deadline, our Broadley’s Direct Install team was proud to step up as a strategic partner.

Planning a Direct Install-Funded Project

We recognized Chartertech was a perfect candidate for the Direct Install program, which helps eligible businesses and institutions make energy-efficient upgrades by covering a significant portion of the project costs.

Direct Install incentives are made available through local utility companies. The program typically allows approved applicants six months to complete their upgrades, but our ambitious goal was to finish everything over spring break 2025!

Our team coordinated every step with the school administration, ensuring that students and staff walked into a cooler, brighter, more comfortable, and energy-efficient building when they returned from break.

This level of precision and commitment is what sets Broadley’s apart from other commercial HVAC providers in New Jersey. Let us show you how our Direct Install team can assist with your commercial HVAC upgrades in Cape May Court House.

Commercial HVAC Upgrades in Atlantic County

So, what exactly did these energy-efficient upgrades entail? We focused on cutting-edge technology designed for long-term savings and enhanced comfort. The installation included:

Lighting: Energy-efficient LED fixtures installed throughout hallways and classrooms cut electricity use and provide brighter illumination, significantly reducing eye strain.

HVAC: We replaced the outdated equipment with nine high-efficiency 3-ton and two 2-ton package rooftop units with AC and gas heat. These systems deliver powerful heating and cooling while consuming far less energy than their predecessors.

Advanced Controls: To deliver maximum energy savings to this Atlantic County high school, we integrated sophisticated controls:

  • Dual Enthalpy Sensors: These smart sensors measure temperature and humidity, allowing the HVAC system to bring in outside air only when it’s cooler and less humid than the indoor climate. These sensors help prevent unnecessary energy waste.
  • Demand Control Ventilation (DCV): This system adjusts the amount of fresh air brought into classrooms based on actual occupancy. When a room is fully occupied, more fresh air comes in. When empty, less is needed, saving energy by not conditioning unneeded outside air.
  • Electronic Fuel Use Economizers: These systems use outside air to cool the building when conditions are favorable. They save energy, especially during mild seasons, because the economizer eliminates the need to run a compressor for cooling.
  • Programmable Smart Thermostats: These thermostats offer precise control and scheduling capabilities. They allow the school to program temperatures around their specific academic calendar and occupancy patterns, optimizing energy use.

Comfort, Savings, and Zero Interruptions!

Chartertech’s participation with Direct Install and Broadley’s yielded impressive results.

The Direct Install incentives covered nearly half the total project costs, and the school’s energy savings are estimated at over $6,900 annually. Beyond the savings, the school benefits from new, energy-efficient HVAC and lighting that improve comfort and the learning environment.

Our efficient planning and execution enabled our expert team to complete the project over spring break without interrupting student learning.
