Why You May Be Spending Too Much Money Heating Your Business

You may notice that your heating bill is rising, but you may not know exactly why. It’s common for your heating bill to rise in the winter, but there are instances where it’s going up unnecessarily high. There are a few reasons your energy bills may be rising higher than they should.

Problem: Your HVAC System Is Losing Efficiency

Your business’s HVAC system could be losing efficiency. This is something that is common among older heating and cooling systems. Over the years, any machine will tend to lose energy efficiency. As the system ages, it could start to require more energy to provide you with the heating it should.

Solution: Schedule Regular Maintenance For Your Heating System

The best way to maintain energy efficiency for your heating system is to schedule regular maintenance once a year. During a regular maintenance, a technician will clean and inspect your heating system, ensuring that it’s running properly and smoothly.

Routine service will also get ahead of any problems or replacements you may need for your HVAC system. It will also clean the system up, making the air that pumps throughout your home cleaner and healthier to breathe. Routine maintenance will help your system maintain its energy efficiency, and keep your energy bills from soaring too high!

Problem: Dirty Air Filter

If your air filter is dirty, it could be preventing proper airflow, and causing a problem. Your air filter catches airborne irritants like dust, dirt, allergens, pet hair, and anything else that may get into the air of your home. Over time this filter can fill up and become clogged, preventing airflow.

Solution: Replace Your Air Filter Every 1-3 Months

Replacing Your Air Filter Is Simple And Important!

We recommend you change your air filter once every 1-3 months. This can be done during routine HVAC maintenance, but it’s also something you can do on your own as well. Keep a few on hand and have your HVAC technician show you how to replace the filter during a service.

Replacing your HVAC filter not only improves airflow and energy efficiency, but it also helps improve the air quality in your home as well!

Problem: Leaking Ductwork

According to Energy Star, it’s estimated that 20-30 percent of the air that flows through your ducts is lost through leaks, cracks, and holes in the ductwork. This can result in higher energy bills than you should have, as well as uneven temperatures.

Solution: Have Your Ductwork Sealed

We recommend you seal your ductwork. You can have a professional come in and fix it, or you could do it yourself with the proper duct sealing equipment. If you aren’t sure about your ductwork, have a professional come in and assess the system. They will be able to tell you if the ductwork is leaking or is an issue that needs to be repaired.

Problem: Poor Insulation

If you have a building that’s poorly insulated, it’s going to cause cold air to get inside, and the warm air inside to leak out. This is going to cause your HVAC system to run harder to heat your business, and cost you more than it should in energy bills.

Solution: Add Insulation

Adding insulation to your building may become an expensive task, but one that will pay off all year long, and for years to come. Not only will additional insulation help keep your space warm in the winter, but it will also help keep your space cooler in the summer as well. Once the installation is installed, it should be set for years, and unless your space experiences some sort of damage, you shouldn’t have to worry about it.

Zoning Your HVAC

Another great way to save energy on your business’s energy bills is by zoning your HVAC. This means you break the HVAC system into different zones that allow you to heat and cool them independently. This can be done by installing dampers and additional thermostats. You can also opt to install a ductless mini split system.

In fact, we installed a ductless mini split system in a Pizza shop last year to take care of a few different spaces and improve the comfort of the business. Mini splits work independently of each other, allowing you to heat and cool each space separately. This is better for personalized comfort, and saving energy by not heating spaces that aren’t being used.
